Mountain Timber Market

Sited in an occupied park on the shores of the Columbia River, the foundation of the new steel and CLT Mountain Timber Market building required the drilling of 300 fifty-foot deep aggregate piers and close collaboration with civil and environmental specialists to control runoff and protect the delicate surrounding environment.

Designed to be an incubator for local new and growing businesses, the 33,000 sf, 2-story Market–opened on schedule and on budget–features a light-filled main floor gallery housing 30+ indoor stalls for local artisans, vendors, and farmers; as well as two full-service restaurants and a distillery and tasting room; 11 retail storefronts; an outdoor food truck area; and rentable facilities for conferences and special events.

An important community element of the project, suspended 14′ above the floor on a custom CLT & steel platform is the 40,000 lb, 140′ Lelooska Totem Pole–carefully restored and expertly relocated by FORMA after more than fifty years of weather damage outside on the waterfront–celebrating the rich history and culture of the Kalama region.
