Olympic South Restoration, Pierce College
Recently completed via a Progressive Design-Build collaboration on Pierce College’s Ft Steilacoom campus, the revitalized Olympic South Building boasts a welcoming new entry and elevator structure and houses the school’s Early Childhood Education department, Fine Arts facilities, and an extension floor for Central Washington University.
A 1970’s era concrete and steel structure, the Olympic South building required a complete indoor demo, abatement, and build-back of its three stories, all systems, utilities, fixtures, and finishes, and portions of the failed exterior envelope and grounds when our Hazmat survey identified that asbestos contamination was still a significant concern following a previous abatement project led by another team.
Surrounded by a campus full of students and staff, it was critical to ensure our remediation and construction operations were safe, clean, and controlled. To achieve this, we required every subcontractor on site to submit and adhere to an asbestos work plan. We also provided a certified Asbestos Supervisor and a full-time, on-site safety representative who reported directly to FORMA’s Superintendent–ensuring safe and contained operations by regularly testing and monitoring air and micro vac dust samples both within the jobsite and across campus.
