Not a Baseball fan? You’ll still like this story
“I’d been eyeing the blank right field wall for a couple of years, and had an idea cooking…I thought about it and realized that if I didn’t build it, no one would.”
With a career building in the education sector and a son on the Tumwater HS baseball team, self-described baseball junkie and longtime FORMA Superintendent Al Bowen saw an opportunity to mix business and pleasure with an iconic addition to that blank right field wall.
Following buy-in from FORMA principals and the Tumwater School District, Al drew up plans for a “little Green Monster” for THS–a manual score board inspired by the great ballparks of the past–and present: Boston’s Fenway Park and Chicago’s Wrigley Field still update their home game scores by hand, but they are the last two MLB parks to do so.
Al called in favors and donations in time and materials from the local construction community and completed the new (but old) scoreboard in time for the T-Birds first baseball game of the season on March 11th.
